Manchester Chinatown New Year 1999
Report of the Chinese New Year Celebrations in Manchester's Chinatown in 1999

Lead by the pounding drums, the huge and symbolic dragon made its way through the crowded Chinatown streets. Manchester Chinatown played host to major celebrations on Sunday 21st. Celebrations were carried out throughout the globe to celebrate Chinese New Year.

Hoards of people, not just Chinese but people from all backgrounds seemed to be there to enjoy the Chinese New Year celebrations. Children played with toy dragons and everyone watched in excitement as the dragon danced in front of the stage. Seconds later firecrackers were lit, sending loud bangs and smoke into the sky over Chinatown. The thundering fire crackers marked this year's celebration for the Year of the Rabbit.

Celebrations continued with messages from key figures in the community. The multi-lingual messages wished good luck and fortune to all.

As the typical Manchester rainy weather drew closer, the afternoon celebrations concluded with more lion dances, watched from all sides. The streets remained busy and the restaurant windows packed, as people enjoyed the fine food and shopping available in Manchester Chinatown.

This year's celebrations proved to be highly successful with enjoyment felt all round.

Happy New Year everyone
