Manchester Chinatown New Year 2000
Report of the Chinese New Year Celebrations in Manchester's Chinatown in 2000

Chinese New Year, one of the most important dates in the Chinese Calendar was celebrated up and down the country today and, nowhere was this more apparent than in the heart of Manchester Chinatown. The streets were lined with people awaiting the arrival of the majestic dragon. A multicultural mix from all over the community had come to take part in the wonderful celebrations welcoming the year of the Dragon.

As the loud fire crackers filled the air with a roar and smoke, the magnificent dragon made its way up the road and through the archway. As the crowds looked on in wonder, the dragon passed close following the beating of the drums.

Closely following the dragon was a small procession of children carrying small dragons and really enjoying the event. In addition to the normal Chinese festivities, Chinatown was also filled with stalls selling Chinese artefacts. There were also funfair rides to make the whole day complete.

Once again Manchester Chinatown has excelled itself in the celebration of this wonderful day. All that remains is for me to wish you a Happy New Year.
