Manchester Chinatown New Year 2001
Report of the Chinese New Year Celebrations in Manchester's Chinatown Sunday 28th January in 2001

Manchester celebrated Chinese New Year, the year of the snake with its usual enthusiastic cheer. Despite the cold and the very thick fog, the streets were lined with multicultural Britain, with members from all communities taking part in the festivities.

This year, there were even more stalls and entertainment for everyone. Celebrations were initiated by the lighting of firecrackers which could be heard from all corners of Chinatown. The highlight of the day was the Chinese dragon lead by the beating of a drum. The crowd cheered as it made its journey from the city hall through to the nearby Chinatown. It danced through the streets making sure that all got a good view of it, finally coming to rest in the centre of Chinatown.

The crowds of people were able to sample more of Chinese culture through a number of events such as tai chi demonstrations and stalls offering ornaments, toys and of course some warm food.

Featured this year were more fairground rides for those who like being shot up in the air. Many people took the opportunity to have lunch at one of Manchester's fine Chinese restaurants while others went shopping returning for dinner in the evening.

The day was rounded off with a large fireworks display, concluding an action packed, exciting day.

I wish you all a Happy New Year.
